Your front steps are more than just an entryway—they’re a key feature of your home’s safety, style, and first impression. Over time, steps can shift, crack, or settle unevenly, creating not only an eyesore but also a potential tripping hazard. That’s why professional step rebuilding is one of the smartest investments you can make in your home’s exterior.
At Bravo Interlock, we follow a proven process to ensure that every step we rebuild is safe, strong, and built to last. Here’s exactly how we do it.
The first step is all about starting fresh. We carefully remove the existing caps and clean away any glue attached to the capstones. Then, we take up the wall blocks beneath the copings, making sure each block is thoroughly cleaned. This extra attention allows us to reattach the blocks securely with a high-quality peel adhesive, setting the stage for long-term durability.
A strong foundation is critical for safe, long-lasting steps. We excavate about 5 inches beneath the original step area, then install a 4-inch layer of compacted three-quarter clear rock. This material creates a base with concrete-like strength, allowing us to confidently provide a 4-year warranty on our step rebuilding work.
Drainage is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most important parts of step construction. Instead of using traditional limestone screenings that trap water, we install a 1-inch layer of chip stone (1/8 size). This high-performance bedding allows water to drain properly, preventing shifting and frost heave. Once installed, we carefully level the base to create a perfectly even foundation for rebuilding.
With the foundation set, it’s time to reconstruct. We reinstall the wall blocks in the correct order, ensuring they’re aligned for both safety and stability. The caps are then glued securely to the blocks, locking everything into place.
To finish, we raise the surrounding pavers so they sit flush with the new coping. This creates a seamless, trip-free surface that not only looks beautiful but also enhances safety.
Next, we stabilize the joints with high-quality polymeric sand. This sand is swept into the joints, compacted with a commercial compactor to ensure it settles deeply, and then activated with water. Once hardened, it locks everything together, preventing weed growth, shifting, and washout.
